Pool Pumps
How do they work?
A pool pump is essential for keeping your pool clean and well-circulated. Its main job is to draw water through the filtration system, ensuring your pool remains clear and fresh. The pump uses an electric motor to turn the impeller, which pushes water through the system. The water enters the pump’s strainer to catch large debris, then moves through the pump, flows through the impeller, and exits to the pool filter for cleaning or heating.
Your Pump Options:
-
Ideal for spas, above-ground pools, and medium-sized in-ground pools, domestic pumps are designed for recirculation, drawing water from the pool and pumping it through the filter. Most domestic pumps run for six to eight hours a day. They can also be paired with pool ancillaries like heating systems, in-floor cleaning, or water features. Make sure to consult with an expert to choose the right pump size for your pool.
-
These pumps offer a more powerful flow of water, making them perfect for large residential pools or pools with multiple ancillaries. If you have a bigger pool or additional equipment like heaters or water features, high-performance pumps can provide the necessary circulation for optimal performance.
-
Designed for commercial-sized pools, these pumps handle a large volume of water and operate under demanding conditions. Ideal for pools that require a high rate of circulation, they ensure efficient filtration and performance in high-traffic environments.
-
Ancillary pumps are used for purposes other than filtration. These include dedicated pumps for solar heating, water features, swim jets, in-floor cleaners, or pressure pool cleaners. Ancillary pumps may be plumbed independently or integrated with the filtration system, drawing water directly from the pool and returning heated water or filtered water to enhance your pool experience.
-
Energy-saving pumps, also known as variable-speed pumps, feature multiple speed settings that help optimize energy efficiency. These pumps allow you to set different speeds depending on how quickly you want to pump water through the filter, reducing energy consumption and lowering operating costs. By running on a low speed for most of the filtration cycle, these pumps save significantly on energy. Higher speeds can be used when additional flow is needed for pool features like suction cleaners or water heaters. Conventional pumps run at a fixed speed, often overworking to accommodate all pool requirements, but energy-saving pumps provide flexibility and efficiency, helping you save on both energy bills and maintenance costs.
What are your pool heating options?
There are three primary heating options to consider for your pool:
solar, gas, and heat pumps.
Each has its unique benefits, offering flexibility and efficiency to match your needs.
Explore the advantages of each type and choose the best solution for your pool.
Solar
-
Solar pool heaters are the most environmentally friendly option, harnessing the sun's natural energy to warm your pool. The process is simple – think of a garden hose left in the sun. When you turn on the tap, hot water flows out because the hose has absorbed heat from the sun. Similarly, a solar collector absorbs sunlight and transfers it as heat to your pool water.
One of the greatest benefits of solar heating is that it pays for itself within just a few years. After the initial installation cost, ongoing operating expenses are minimal, as the sun provides free energy. Solar systems are low-cost to operate, with the only expense being electricity for the pump to circulate water through the solar absorber. These systems are also easy to maintain.
However, the efficiency of solar heating depends on three factors:
The size and area of the solar collector;
The location and exposure to sunlight;
The quality of the solar system.
Solar systems are ideal for sunny climates, offering long-term savings, with a lifespan of up to 20 years when properly installed. However, they are less effective in areas with limited sunlight or heavy shading, and installation can be costly, although government rebates may be available.
Heat Pump
-
Heat pumps are highly efficient and economical, extracting heat from the air (similar to a reverse cycle air conditioner) to warm your pool water. They use far less energy compared to gas or electric heaters, making them more cost-effective to run. While heat pumps take longer to warm up a pool than gas heaters, they maintain the temperature efficiently, ensuring consistent warmth with lower running costs.
Heat pumps save up to 80% compared to LPG and 50% over natural gas heaters. They work regardless of the weather, making them reliable year-round. However, their energy efficiency may slightly decrease in colder temperatures, as the pump needs to work harder to heat the water in cooler weather. Despite this, heat pumps are still a great option for most climates.
Although the initial cost of installation may be high, the long-term savings from lower energy bills make heat pumps a cost-effective choice over time.
Gas
-
Gas heaters provide the fastest method for heating your pool, allowing you to enjoy warm water on demand. They are ideal for extending your swimming season, regardless of the weather. Gas heaters use natural gas or LPG to heat pool water quickly, making them a popular option for those who want immediate results.
The key advantage of gas heaters is their speed – they can heat your pool water to temperatures as high as 40°C (104°F), no matter the climate. They are simple to use and are typically more affordable upfront compared to other heating options. Gas heaters also offer dual controls, which are perfect for spas that require higher temperatures.
However, gas heaters have some drawbacks. They are less energy-efficient compared to heat pumps or solar systems and can be more expensive to run. Gas heaters are best suited for pools that don’t get used often during the colder months. Additionally, they tend to have a shorter lifespan, typically lasting around 5 years with proper maintenance.
When choosing a gas heater, the right size depends on:
The volume of water to be heated.
How quickly you want the pool to reach your desired temperature.
Your preferred swimming temperature.
Lighting
Gone are the days when your pool was dark and uninviting after the sun set.
With the right lighting, your pool can become the most appealing place to relax and entertain after dark.
Not only does lighting enhance the atmosphere, but it also increases safety and adds a stunning backdrop for outdoor gatherings.
-
Halogen lighting remains one of the most common types of pool lighting, although it's gradually being replaced by more energy-efficient LED lights. Halogen lights have long been popular due to their bright illumination and easy maintenance. One key advantage of halogen lights is that you can simply replace the globe when it burns out, while LEDs require full replacement. However, halogen lights typically last between 2,000 and 5,000 hours, significantly less than LED lights. Proper usage can extend the life of halogen globes, as prolonged periods of disuse can damage them.
Though halogen lights are generally cheaper to purchase initially, they consume more power compared to LED lights. Waterco’s Litestream Halogen Lights offer a 100-watt option that refracts light around your pool without losing brightness, making it a reliable choice for those who prefer halogen lighting.
-
LED (light-emitting diode) lighting has transformed the pool lighting industry with its energy efficiency and long-lasting durability. While LED lights tend to have a higher upfront cost than halogen lights, their advantages are making them the preferred choice for many pool owners. LED lights use only 15% of the energy consumed by halogen lights and produce less heat, making them more energy-efficient and safer. Waterco’s Britestream LED lights are engineered with built-in heat management for enhanced performance.
LED lights have an impressive lifespan of over 70,000 hours, which is equivalent to more than 30 years of use if run for six hours a day. With the availability of high-quality, brighter LED options at more affordable prices, LEDs are quickly becoming the top choice over halogen lights. Waterco’s Britestream range includes some of the brightest LED lights available, providing exceptional illumination while generating minimal heat.
Britestream LED lights come in various options, including wall-mounted, surface-mounted, and retrofit LED lights, available in different diameters for concrete and fibreglass pools. One of the standout features of LED lights is their versatility – they can produce a wide range of colours without needing coloured lenses. Britestream’s multi-coloured LEDs can be easily programmed to switch between nine colour programs, creating a dynamic atmosphere for your pool.
-
Waterco’s Britestream lights are designed to replace existing halogen pool lights with ease, cutting your pool's electrical power consumption by up to 85%. The Britestream LED Replacement Kit includes a retrofit connector and a universal pool light adaptor, allowing for seamless integration with most existing pool light systems.
-
Flush-mounted lighting, available in both halogen and LED varieties, is installed directly into the pool wall, creating a smooth, sleek finish with only the light’s face visible. The main benefit of flush-mounted lighting is its flexibility in placement; they can be positioned almost anywhere in the pool, including near steps, without protruding and being vulnerable to damage.
Waterco’s Britestream niche lights protrude just 11mm from the pool wall, offering a stylish and clean finish that blends seamlessly with your pool’s design.
-
Surface-mounted lighting is installed on the side of the pool, extending into the water. These lights are known for their ability to produce a greater amount of light than flush-mounted lights, making them ideal for those seeking brighter pool illumination. Surface-mounted lights can be easily installed in concrete, fibreglass, and vinyl pools.
Another advantage of surface-mounted lighting is the ability to easily replace existing lights with Britestream LED surface-mounted lights using a convenient adaptor plate, offering a quick and efficient upgrade to energy-saving LED technology.
Waterco’s range of LED lighting offers a variety of options, allowing you to create the perfect ambiance. Today, pool lighting comes in many forms, from traditional halogen surface-mounted lights to modern LED, fibre optic, wall-mounted, flush-mounted, multi-coloured lights, and a range of shapes and sizes. Whatever your vision, there's a lighting solution to bring your pool to life.
